Flammable and Combustible Liquids #3

Flammable and Combustible Liquids

Storing Flammable/Combustible Liquids

All flammable/combustible liquids must be stored properly in areas where they won’t block pathways, entryways, and stairways to safe designated areas when they are involved in a fire. Follow these safety tips when using a flammable/ combustible storage cabinet:

· Use a commercially available flammable liquid storage cabinet.

· Cabinet should be labeled “Flammable-Keep Fire Away.”

· Doors should be kept closed (and labeled accordingly).

· Vents should be covered.

· All containers should be kept in cabinet when not in use.

Although the cabinets are usually referred to as flammable liquid storage cabinets, combustible liquids are allowed to be stored in the cabinet, also. Any liquids stored in the cabinets should be compatible. Warning: These cabinets are designed for liquid storage only. They are not intended for the storage of cylinders of compressed gases or liquefied gasses, especially those that are flammable, or any other incompatible materials.

Spray Painting

Any spray painting performed that involves the use of flammable/combustible liquids must be performed inside an approved spray booth or subject to the following:

· less than 6 gallons of paint mixture are used during the course of day, and

· personnel are not exposed to air concentrations at or above the PEL or are properly protected using respirators.

· spraying is not near potential ignition sources, and in conformance with state and local air regulation

All mixing and dispensing of flammable and combustible liquids must be done within the spray booth or enclosed spray room, with the ventilation system running.

Cleaning and maintenance of the spray booth or enclosed spray room must be performed on a regular basis.

Ignition sources are prohibited within 20 feet of any openings and all electrical wiring and equipment must be approved for use in spray booth.
